Has it been that long?

Since my last weblog? Well, I can't say I haven't been busy.

  • As you may have seen from my Ordering Page, I am taking very few orders for my own whips at the moment but am supplying an increasing demand for high quality Australian whips. Most of these are not shown on the website - not least because of the volatility of the exchange rate at the moment - so, if you are in the market for a new whip, please feel free to get in touch for prices and availability.
  • If you are waiting for a whip from my hand, progress is still painfully (I mean this literally) slow, but I am gradually working through the list.
  • I have been having a clear out, and have sold a number of ex-display whips over the last few weeks. I will be listing a few more on the 'In stock' page in the near future so, if you don't feel able to afford a brand new whip, keep checking back there.
  • I am currently waiting for news on a delivery date for the next shipment from Australia, and will keep customers waiting for Australian whips updated as soon as I have news.
  • Since Christmas, the exchange rate has taken a dive and shipping costs have increased. The cost of making or importing a whip has risen by 20% or more, and seems to have stabilised. Consequently, all of the prices on the website, with the exceptions of stock whips and accessories, are very much out of date. When I get around to it, I will be updating the site.

Easter Closure

It is Holy Week. I will be not be answering business related calls or emails from close of business on Maundy Thursday, through to 11.45 on Tuesday 14th April.

  • I have, of late, been selling the occasional bit of Christian leatherwork on Ebay. Click here to see if I have anything listed at the moment.

Happy Easter!

Christmas and New Year Closures

I will be closed for telephone orders from the 23rd of December through to the second of January 2009; and again from the 8th January through to the 12th. I will not be taking any calls related to whips during those periods.
You will still be able to order anything on the website that has a payment button next to the description; and email enquiries are always welcome. Emails will be dealt with when I return to work.

  • The last beginners' Australian Bullwhips are being dispatched today, so you should get them in time for the big day.
  • Cow hide stock whips bound for Holland will also be dispatched today or tomorrow but, obviously, these will not be there before Christmas.
  • And the last whip that I am going to get finished before the end of the year is a cat of nine tails for a very patient chap who has been waiting a long time for it. If I can get it in the post today, I shall do so. If not, it will be on the 23rd.

Thank you to everybody who has bought a whip over the last year; and especially to those who have had the patience to wait for one from my own hands through all the ill-health. Here's wishing you all a peaceful and fulfilling Christmas; and a happy 2009.

Ordering whips directly from the website.

It is now too late to order any whips for Christmas using payment buttons on the website. Christmas orders are also closed for beginners' bullwhips.

It is still just about possible to get an order in for a high quality Australian snake, signal, bull or stock whip; and latigo stock whips. You will need to email me to discuss your order first because these are all made to order and not shown on the website.

As stated previously, I am not taking orders for my own whips.

Latest News.

In addition to the above:

  • If you are in America, awaiting a black and red bullwhip from my hand, I hope to have that whip finished today.
  • The next delivery of beginner's bullwhips and white hide stock whips will be on it's way from Australia in the first week of December so should get to customers, who are awaiting these, in time for Christmas.
  • If you are waiting for a high quality Australian bull, stock or snake whip, the whip maker tells me that she has almost finished the whips she is working on at the moment, so they should be on their way here in the next week or so.
  • I am out of stock of leather strops, Fiebing's Aussie Leather Dressing and Sedgewick's. New stock should be arriving in the next week or so.
  • Stocks of DVD's are very low. I have a few more arriving before Christmas but, if you want a DVD as a Christmas pressie, get your order in now before they become spoken-for.

Christmas is Coming

There is still just about enough time to get an order in for Christmas delivery in the UK.

I am not, currently, taking orders for my own whips because, as regular readers of this blog will know, long term health problems prevent me from giving accurate delivery estimates and I already have an order list well into next year. I am pleased, however, to report that I am now working with an 'new' Australian whip maker whose work I have liked for a number of years; and I am now her UK stockist.

This means that there will be some changes coming to the website in the weeks and months ahead - in particular, the ability to once again order high specification stock whips directly from the site (and this lady's stock whips are superb) - and that, once again, you can have a high quality whip made for you within a relatively short time frame (typically 6-8 weeks).

So, if you're in the market for a high quality bull, stock, snake or signal whip, drop me a line: mailroom@whipstore.com

Meanwhile, I have not stopped making whips. As well as working through the order list, the occasional whip from my own hands will, from time to time, appear on the 'in stock' page.

Recent Whips

Here are a few offerings from the work completed since my last post:

To the left is an 8pl bullwhip in brandy and natural, that I made as a prize for this year's British Whip Cracking Convention.
To the right is a pile of straps that I was asked to make for some water carriers to be used in a historical drama being filmed at Elstree during the summer. Very much a rush job, this - I got the impression that the props company had thought 'how hard can it be' when they got the commission, then realised: 'that hard' as the deadline approached.

Back to the left, we have a flexible flogger. These were among my first designs, and were very rare when I started making them, but are pretty common now. This one was shot loaded with a plaited belly and bolster, just like an ordinary whip. The tails are integral to the core and belly, so cannot come adrift short of being torn or cut - unlike most floggers, in which the tails are nailed, glued or tied on. It was nice to make one of these again, although you won't see them being offered on a regular basis - very much a custom commission!

On the right again, we have a snake whip and Mamba 16 plait whip set in black and aqua green, made for a customer in Japan. I don't use bright tannery dyed colours because the leather is often inferior, so I had to dye the lace for these. I really dislike dyeing lace, it's a smelly and fiddly job, but it was worth the effort in this case - the photo doesn't do the colour justice - and the customer was over the moon when he finally got his whips.

July Already?

Time flies......

It doesn't seem like it was may when I posted my last blog, so it's long past due for an update.

Work has been slow over the last month. Once again, health issues have raised their ugly heads. Not so much for me but my partner has been ill and needed quite a bit of care. Consequently, June was largely written-off; and my predictions about getting whips out by such-and-such date went out of the window. I am back properly this week, I hope, and will start the business of catching up all over again!

British Whip Cracking Convention

Despite feeling significantly below par, we attended the 4th UK whip convention on 5th July; and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. If you haven't yet been to one of these, make sure you go next year. Lots of friendly people, help for total beginners, whips for sale (none of mine, this year) and prizes to win.

It was great to swap whip making notes with other makers as well; and to make my usual farcical entry in the 'expert' category of the target cutting comp. My other half, despite being under the weather, did rather better and came second in one of the competitions.

Great venue, as well; with helpful staff. A write-up of the day will be found, in due course, on http://www.ukwhipconvention.com/.

Here's a photo of the whip I made as a prize for this year's competition: it's a 5.5 foot 8pl bullwhip in brandy with natural tan accents. The winner seemed quite pleased, as it turned out that he'd been after one of my whips for some time! Doh! One less sale made. Never mind, it couldn't have gone to a better home.

Latest News

  • If you're waiting for an Australian whip, these should - finally - be on their way to the UK around now. I have contacted the whip maker for the latest update on these. One delivery is already in the country and I will be picking this up today. If your whip is in that, I will be posting it out ASAP.
  • If I have told you that I am awaiting leather for your whip - this applies especially for whips using heavier leather, and ones with whisky leather in them, I am told that this is now on it's way to the UK - after various hiccups involving supplier's spam filter.
  • If you are waiting for a custom colour whip, these are nearly finished and will (with a bit of luck) finally be despatched at the end of the week.
  • If you're in America and waiting for a bullwhip, this also nearly finished - at long last - and I will try to get that off to you around the middle of next week.
  • I am currently out of stock on various leather care products. An order placed for some of these failed to materialise, so I will be re-ordering ASAP. Seems to be the summer for mix ups and delays.
OK that's it from me for now. Happy cracking, and here's hoping for better weather soon!

Loss of a whip maker; and Indiana madness.

An awful lot has been going on in the month, or so, since I last blogged. First thing to report, sadly, is the loss of Blue Gum Whips.
Blue Gum was a family-run whip workshop in Australia, making a wide range of really good whips that were distinctive in that many needed little breaking in but had excellent handling. If you ordered a roo hide stock whip, Aussie signal whip or heavy Australian bullwhip from me in the last couple of years, it would have been a Blue Gum Whip.
Blue Gum also support the British Whip Cracking Convention for the last two or three years. So the loss of a great Australian whip maker who also helped the development of whip cracking here in Britain, is a double whammy. I wish all the best for John and his family.
If you have a whip on order, being made by Blue Gum, I will, by now, either have written to you offering a refund or I will be seeking a similar whip from another maker. Some of their whips were very distinctive; and I feel it would be difficult to find an alternative, so those customer have been refunded already.
Australian beginners' bullwhips and cowhide stock whips are still available; and I can also get some rather nice 8 plait stock whips with half-plait handles.

On a lighter note, with the release of the new Indiana Jones film, the world seems to have gone whip mad. Orders have been coming in thick and fast - far faster than I can make them - as well as interest from TV and video companies. The BBC were seeking a whip that could 'make the cracking noise without being used properly' but, when I stared talking about risk assessments and eyeballs, decided that it might not make the best telly ever. Although, it has to be said, that Jonathon Ross would cut a dashing figure in his eye-patch, on your Friday night telly. Sadly, they took what I said too much to heart and decided not to send Mr. Ross along for the suggested coaching. I think he would have enjoyed himself immensely (I would have). Another time, perhaps.

Placing Orders
All of this hectic activity leads me on to the subject of placing orders. This week, I have had the first orders confirmed for 2009! This seems like a good place at which to close the order book once more, for whips made by myself. I have enough work to keep me going for quite some time, including plenty of interesting custom designs; and I really need to concentrating on getting those whips out before trying to attract more business. I certainly need to slow down the rate at which new work is coming in. Lovely though it is, to be in demand, it's no good if I can't make the whips fast enough and; although I could take short cuts to speed the process up, I won't compromise on quality. If it isn't the best I can make, I don't want to make it.
I will be making whips for stock throughout the year, as well as working on new designs, so do feel free to get in touch if there is something you're after. You never, know I may have just the thing on the plaiting bench. Finished whips will, of course, be put up for sale on my 'in stock' page: www.whipstore.com/whipsforsale.htm . Unfortunately, one or two that I was hoping to put on the site have now been earmarked as alternatives for people were waiting for a Blue Gum whip, so the page may be rather empty for a while.

Latest News
Most the latest news is covered above.
  • If you've emailed me in the last few days and not received a reply, please try again! My email client seems to have developed the annoying habit of randomly deleting emails when I click send.
  • I am still playing catch up on orders as a result of all the ill health over the winter, but I am slowly winning! Over the next couple of weeks, I will be completing various bullwhips, mambas, snake and signal whips for customers in Japan, the USA and Italy. At that point, I will be working about three weeks behind. If my hands don't fall apart meanwhile then, by the end of next month, I should be virtually up to date - just in time for the British Whip Cracking Convention in July.
  • If you've ordered some rather special dog leads, I will endeavour to get these slotted in some time in June.
  • If you're waiting for whips with estimated delivery dates from late June onwards, you'll be please to know that these are currently on course to be despatched on time.
  • If you're waiting for an Australian 12pl bull or snake whip; or cowhide stock whip, these should be arriving here any time now but I have not yet had confirmation that they have been despatched. I will be chasing these up over the weekend.
  • If you're waiting for Accessories orders, then these those that are not already on their way will be going out today or Tuesday (Monday is a national holiday, here in the UK). The exception to this is the Fundamental Whip Cracking Techniques DVD for which, I am currently awaiting new stock.
  • I am currently out of stock on leather dressing and saddle soap. New supplies should be in within the next week or so.
Recent Whips
Here are a couple of my favourite whips from the last month or so:

This is an 8 plait, 3 foot English Black snake. Very, very pleased with this whip. Although I use heavier skins than some other whip makers, the plaiting is silky smooth; and the look superb. Lovely whip that throws like a dream and will give many years of service.
On the right, we have a custom mini bullwhip with a plaited in cracker. This was made for a lady who has had several whips from me over the last few years and really knows what she wants! Just under three feet long in total, it was so stiff, when I had finished it, that it could have been used as a riding crop. Having said that, it was already cracking fairly easily; and I have no doubt that it will loosen up to be a really great little whip.
I dyed the leather myself -diluting the dye to get the right tone after three applications, so that the colour would sink right into the leather - a smelly old process that I can't say I enjoy very much but which, in this case, was definitely worth it.

That's all for now. Hope you all have a good Bank Holiday weekend!

No Phone - 21st April 2008

My phone isn't working at the moment so, if you need to get in touch, please write to me: mailroom@whipstore.com. The telephone company doesn't seem to know what the problem is but assures me (from a call centre in another country) that there are engineers 'working in your area'. How very reassuring. I am told that it could be Wednesday until normal service resumes.

Meanwhile, if you call, you may get a ringing tone but you won't get an answer!

Latest News

  • One of the two customers mentioned in my last blog did get in touch, and his whip has now been sent out.
  • If you were expecting to hear from me last week, about completion of a whip, an injury to my arm meant a week off work. I will endeavour to get it done this week.
  • I expect to despatch the following this week: 5 foot bullwhips, 3 foot snake whips. If you are awaiting one of these, I will be contacting you in the next couple of days to arrange payment of the balance or collection around the end of the week.
  • If you're in Italy or America, and awaiting your whip, I expect to have your whips ready around the end of next week. If you're in Japan, your whips should be ready shortly thereafter. This doesn't apply to recently placed orders.
  • There has been a delay on Australian stock, snake and bullwhips. I hope to see these in the next few weeks.

Recent Whips

Here's one of my favourite whips from March.

This is a 16 plait, 4 foot, signal whip in green and black. I dyed the leather especially for the whip, rather than using weaker tannery dyed skins. The result is as beautiful as it is functional - the best signal whip I've recently made.

What the customer said: It feels fantastic to use and the literature you posted with it was much appreciated as well. It handles brilliantly!

Stock Whips are not......

....whips in stock. That is to say that, whilst a stock whip may (or may not) be in stock, the phrase 'stock whip' refers to a particular type of whip, and not the possibility that it is a finished whip ready to send out. If you order a whip from the 'stock whips' page, then that whip is made to order. If you order a whip from the 'in stock' page - and that may or may not be a stock whip, depending upon what is in stock - then that is a finished whip, ready to send out.

This seems to be pretty clear to me, looking at the relevant pages, but maybe it is less clear to people who are new to whips. Certainly, we had some mild panic recently, when a theatre company rang up on the day they needed the whip they thought they had ordered from stock but which, at that moment, was somewhere between here and Australia. As it turned out, I was able to supply a more suitable whip and get it to them in time for their press night that evening.

The moral of this story is that, if you're in a hurry - and especially if you are not very familiar with the world of whips -it is always better to make personal contact before placing an order, so that you can discuss your intended use and get the best whip for your needs.

Is it really a month since the last weblog entry? Well, the last two weeks have been largely written off from a work point of view, thanks to another virus; but I will be back in the workshop again today: plaiting bellies and dying leather. Inspecting for leaks, as well, because the wind was pretty wild this morning. This was/is the worst storm of the winter, apparently; and the back porch roof has leaked in some style.

I am, once again able to access the server on my website, so there will be no more lists of 'in stock' whips on this blog. Bookmark www.whipstore.com/whipsforsale.htm and keep checking there - new whips generally arrive every three weeks or so, and any that aren't ear marked for customers will end up on that page.

Is This You?
I have 2 customers awaiting white hide whips. I have questions for you, about your orders, and need to get in touch; but can get no reply to emails. If you are waiting for a white hide whip, and haven't received it, please get in touch!

Recent Whips
It will come as no surprise that nothing has gone out in the last couple of weeks, but there should be whips shipping this week. Here here are one or two interesting pieces, however, from previous weeks.
The first 'whips' I ever sold were floggers and rope tawses - for want of a better word. I don't make many floggers these days. Unless somebody wants one made specifically for them, it seems better to leave flogger making to the various people out there who specialise in them. Every once in a while, however, somebody does want something a little special.

This flogger was made with around 35 heavy falconry leather tails. This is unstuffed vegetable tanned roo hide. I wouldn't usually use such leather for whip making because, in the substances requires for fine braiding, it is significantly weaker than the leather I usually choose. If you can find a very clean skin it is, however, superb for floggers. Really good heavy skins are a hard to come by at the moment, and the best come undyed. This skin was a real beauty; and a pleasure to work with. I dyed this leather several times to get the tone I wanted. It may look black on your screen but it is, in fact, a very dark brown. The handle has a 12 strand braid in dyed whip leather, with pineapple knots at either and a hanging loop for storage. Well balanced; a nice flogger. What the customer said: I received the flogger on Tuesday and it is everything I expected; so well worth the wait. Both myself and my partner are very pleased.

Here's something completely different. These are often regarded as 'Pakistani' whips mainly, I think, because that's where this pattern seems to come from these days. There are, however, occasional examples that seem to be of European origin, and are of a much higher standard. This was not one of the very poor whips one most commonly sees, but I don't think it was one of the old European ones, either. It certainly had some age to it. This was evident from the condition and weakness of the leather. The original whip maker had adopted a novel approach to tapering the whip: the core was made of strips of leather of progressively narrower diameter, nailed - yes, nailed - together.

By the time I received the whip, the leather was extremely weak and dry. It must have had reasonable strength originally, being fairly thick and having no repairs in the section I unbraided but lack of care, time, and use in the wrong places had left it with myriad cracks. After a lot of conditioning, some very careful braiding enabled me to tighten the the last couple of feet of the thong but leather was simply too weak for a fall knot at that point. In the end, I shortened the whip still further, gave it a long heavy fall, and tied a slightly different style of fall knot that placed less strain on the lace. This enabled me to pull just hard enough to get a secure knot. The resulting whip was, somewhat to my surprise, extremely accurate and easy to crack. What the customer said: Very pleased with what you have done with that whip, it cracks nice and loud.

This is the first of a new line of Australian snake whips. These will be held in stock on a regular basis from April; and represent excellent value for money. It's a 12 plait whip, neatly finished and very easy to crack. I am, at present, taking orders for these at £115 including UK delivery. You won't find a better 12 plait, 4 foot snake whip anywhere near this price in this country. What the customer said: Whip arrived safely this morning and I am delighted with the quality of workmanship. It's a great product and I can crack it straight out of the box every every time; and I only had a few hours training last Sunday
Latest News
I have, once again, closed the order book for my own whips in order to concentrate on existing orders. You can, however, continue to order Australian whips of all types. As with the snake whip above, these whips are chosen for the high performance they offer at an excellent price. Delivery times are typically 6-8 weeks.

Death of a hard drive

The hard disk on my computer died last week, and has been at the engineers ever since. This means that I had no email access until last night, when I had the 'pleasure' of wading through around one thousand spam emails in search of messages in need of replies.

If you have emailed me in the last week or so, but had no reply, please re-send your email! There is a very good chance it got deleted accidentally or, if it arrived before the computer died, has been lost.

I now have internet access on an old laptop computer, but all of my business files are innaccessible. Don't worry: I do have copies of all current customer orders etc but, inevitably, some emails have been lost and I need to track back through my records to rebuild the waiting list and make sure I include any special requirements. Meanwhile, I am still playing catch-up on whips made to order so it's promising to be another long week!

Whips in Stock

Until I have sorted the present 'technical difficulties', I will be unable to update my 'in stock' page on the website, so here's what's up for grabs:

1 x Australian snake whip, 4ft, 12pl. Nice, fairly heavy, whip. No fancy braiding and a simple, tripled, turk's head knot mean that here's a good quality whip at an excellent price. As you would expect, it features a bolstered, plaited core, red hide fall, and neatly finished overlay with 8 plait point. Easy cracking whip that would be great for learning with. £115

1 x Aussie bullwhip, 4ft, 12 pl. Lightweight whip that is well suited to indoor target work or a good choice for the first decent whip for a young person. Another easy to crack whip. £115

1 x Aussie stock whip, 4ft 8pl. Nicely finished whip with a fully plaited, steel lined cane stock. A heavy redhide fall and plaited cracker make the whip immensely tough: well suited to heavy daily use and practicing rapid multiple cracking. £139

All of those prices include UK postage by Special Delivery. Insured overseas shipping costs £15 (one or two countries cost more).

If any of the above appeals to you, drop me a line and we'll take it from there.

Other than all of the above?

The omnipresent health problems mean that, as well as having to mess around with computers, I am still taking time off work. I am 3-4 weeks behind on whips made to order, but February has some scope for catching up and I am beginning to make headway. Unusual custom commissions are a little further behind.

I am not taking any more orders for my own whips, until the order list has become much shorter.

The good news is that good quality beginners bullwhips and snake whips, as well as budget and high quality stock whips, from various whip makers in Australia, are all available to order; and take up to 6-8 weeks, depending on where in the delivery cycle we happen to be when you place your order.

  • 6ft and 4ft black bullwhips, and roo hide floggers, should be on their way to you tomorrow or Saturday; along with accessories orders.
  • 5ft bullwhips still outstanding should be finished next week.
  • I am expecting the next lot of Australian bullwhips and white hide stock whips around the 15th of this month. If you have ordered a white hide yard whip within the last day or two, I will try to get your whip added into this order. Failing that, it will come in the next delivery.
  • I will be making custom mini bullwhips and short snake whips around the end of next week and in the week following.

Obit: Ron Edwards

I was sad to read that Ron Edwards, a prolific author and one of the key figures in the survival - and revival - of much Australian folk music, tradition and craft, died on 5th January 2008 after a long illness.

Mr Edwards was born in 1930, and grew up during a period of rapid change, in which traditional farming and bushcraft were being replaced by modern, mechanised methods. He realised that the old ways were dying out, and started to record as much as possible in words and pictures. He ended up publishing over 300 books, covering everything from traditional Australian folk songs to whip making; which, of course, is how I know of him.

I never met Mr Edwards, but would have liked to have done. I came across his books after I had laboriously taught myself most of what I know; and my life would have been so much easier had I heard of him earlier. His enthusiasm for the subject, and a keen belief that knowledge should be shared lest it be lost, shows clearly in his straightforward writing style and distinctive drawings. His death is a loss, not just for Australia, but for anyone around the world who has a belief in the value of old ways and traditional skills. His work, of course, lives on; and will be a source of inspiration and enjoyment for many years to come.

A New Year, A New Whip?

2008 and is here, and stretching away ahead of us. With my order list already full up to March, I am not currently taking orders for whips I make myself; but you can order cow and kangaroo hide stock whips from the site, and I expect to have small numbers of Australian bullwhips and stock whips on hand by the end of this month.

I usually close for 2 weeks at Christmas, and am still closed for telephone enquiries until 7th January, but I will be spending the next few days in the plaiting shed in order to catch up a little bit.

Latest News

  1. Over the next week I will be endeavouring to finish 8 and 6 plait bullwhips; and multitails, for customers around the country, then moving on to whips due around the middle of this month.

  2. If you have a whip in for repair, I will try to get this done in the next week or so.

  3. If you're waiting for a white hide yard whip, these should be in stock around the third week of the month.

  4. If you're waiting for an 8 foot Australian bullwhip, the whip maker missed this out of my last delivery but has promised that it will be on it's way any time now, so it should arrive by the middle of the month.

  5. If you have sent final payment on any whip, your order will be sent out as soon as the payment has cleared. The holiday seems to have slowed this down somewhat.

  6. If you have emailed me at any time over the last week and half, and not received a reply, please try again: I checked my email for the first time, this morning, since Christmas Eve and received some 850 emails. My spam filter only managed to intercept half of the junk mails, and 'junked' a couple of genuine enquiries. I think I replied to everything that needed a reply, but it's possible that I may have missed one or two.

More of the same

Health continues to be the story of the day. If you've been reading this blog for some time, you'll know that I have chronic health problems. Earlier this year I had thought that I had finally given these the push but over the last two months or so I have had one infection after another - a sure sign of impending (?) relapse.

This is giving me cause to reconsider my business model; and there will be some changes in how I got about things in the New Year. More on those nearer the time.

Meanwhile, here's the state of play on whips due out this side of Christmas:

  1. If you have placed a deposit for an Australian whip, the whip makers have informed me that these should all arrive this side of Christmas.
  2. If you have bought an Australian snake whip off the website, you should be receiving that today.
  3. All accessories orders, to date, have been despatched.
  4. If you're expecting an English Blacksnake, you should be receiving it tomorrow.
  5. The same applies to Mambas.
  6. If you're expecting a Yasp, it should be finished tomorrow.
  7. If you're expecting a cat o' nine tails, these should be finished early to mid next week.
  8. English bullwhips will be despatched in the w/s 17th December.
  9. Roo hide floggers will be made in the week starting 17th December.

All of the above assumes no more time off work which, unfortunately, I cannot guarantee.

I have orders through to March for my own whips, and am not taking any more at present. You can order an Australian snake, signal, bull or stock whip. Most of these are not shown on the website, so please get in touch for prices and pictures. Delivery on these is around 6-8 weeks. Best means of contact is by email.
